How to fix Diablo 2 in Windows 8.1 and play it in higher resolution

Well, its been a while since I’ve written a new tutorial, especially one for an epic game like Diablo 2 and Lord Of Destruction.

Actually, Diablo 2 and Lord Of Destruction run just fine on my Windows 8.1 64bit computer. This tutorial will not be a fix but rather I will show you a neat little mod with which you can play Diablo 2 on a resolution higher than the standard 800x600.

By the way I’ve patched Diablo 2 to version 1.12a so if you encounter any problems try patching to this version first.

But first, If you can’t currently run Diablo 2 on your machine, try setting compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 2 with Run As Administrator and Disable display scaling on high DPI settings turned on.

If that doesn’t work, then try what this guy here says.

If you didn’t watch the video, here is a summary of what he is saying. Download version 1.4e of the Glide3-to-OpenGL-Wrapper from here, extract the compressed zip, and copy its contents to your Diablo 2 installation folder. After which, run D2VidTst.exe (if D2VidTst.exe doesn’t start, you should set it to run in compatibility mode with the aforementioned settings), press Run Test, select 3dFx Glide and click on the OK button.

If Diablo 2 still doesn’t run, then you should try running the game in Windowed mode. To do this Right Click on you desktop shortcut and select properties. In the Target field AFTER THE LAST QUOTATION MARK add a space and -w, and press the OK button.

And now for the mod, as I said, it allows you to run the game in a resolution higher than 800x600. The Mod is called D2MultiRes and before I go any further I would like to state a few drawbacks, well actually just one. In order to run the game with this mod you’ll have to play it in windowed mode. (i’ve explained how to do that above. (Just add -w after target in the properties tab)

To download the mod, follow this link and click the Download Now button. Once downloaded, you’ll have to extract the zip file and copy D2MultiResGame.exe, D2MultiRes.dll and
D2MultiRes.mpq to your Diablo II installation directory. Then start D2VidTst.exe, you can skip the test if you want, and select DirectDraw. If you don’t do that you, the game will likely crash or show abnormal behavior. D2MultiRes doesn’t support Direct3D nor 3dFx Glide.

Now to start and play the game, you’ll need to use the D2MultiResGame.exe launcher. Ingame load your character, go to Options, then Video Options and select Resolution to change the game’s resolution. You should now notice new resolution available including 1920x1080 however, I find the world a bit too big with this resolution. I prefer the 1280x768. Also when you run at 1920x1080 the bottom bar is off screen.

P.S - Again, if D2MultiResGame.exe doesn't start the game, then run it in compatibility mode with the aforementioned settings.

Play On!

How to fix and play Max Payne 1 and 2 on Windows 7 and 8 computers

I have written this tutorial for fans of Max Payne 1 and 2 who want to run both games on Windows 7 and 8 computers but had no luck so far.

For those of you who haven't played Max Payne before, the game is awesome! It was released in 2001 and developed by Remedy Entertainment, and is center around a New York police detective (Max Payne) who witnesses his family getting murdered and unravels a government conspiracy while investigating who was behind it all.

Max Payne 1 Game Trailer

What follows below is a step-by-step guide taking you through each “tweak” you should make to play Max Payne 1 on Windows 7 and 8 machines. Once I've explained all steps about how to run Max Payne 1, i will continue to write about Max Payne 2, so if you are here for the later, you can simply scroll down to the second section.

How To Fix Max Payne 1 for Windows 7 and 8+ machines.

1. If you haven't installed the game yet, please do so now. In case you've modified any of the game files, please reinstall the game so we can start fresh. If you don't have the game, you can buy a digital downloadable version from Steam or a physical disk version from Amazon if you prefer the advantages of a physical copy.

2. Make sure you’ve got no space in your directory structure. So if you’ve installed Max Payne at D:\Games\Max Payne, you should rename your “Max Payne” directory to MaxPayne e.g D:\Games\MaxPayne

3. Go to the exe file from which you start the game, right click, and choose properties from the menu. From the new window go to the Compatibility tab and turn on “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and from the dropdown menu right underneath choose “Windows 98/Me”. Next turn on “Run this program as an administrator” and press the OK button on the window to confirm changes.

4. With this 4th step we’ll fix the sound issues of Max Payne. If you’ve ever attempted to play Max Payne 1 on Windows Vista/7 or 8, then you probably came accross the audio issues with the cut-scene talks, intros etc - they are simply missing. The reason for this happening is that the original sound files are incompatible with the aforementioned Windows versions. To fix this you’ll need to convert the sound files to a more compatible format. Lucky us, there is a simple patch developed by “DarkjeThe2nd” which solves this problem.

You can download the patch by clicking here. To install it simply follow the instructions on the forum. (1) Extract the zipped file to your game directory (2) run the MaxBatch file and press “C” to convert your sound files. After the process has been completed, you can delete the downloaded files.

If you cannot extract the file or you don't know how, you should install and use either WinRAR or 7zip. Once you've installed either application and by right clicking on the zipped file, you'll see options to extract the file.

If you have troubles running the MaxBatch file, for example if the Window closes too fast, then do this optional step. You’ll need to navigate and execute the file from your command prompt as an administrator.

  1. If you are on Windows 8, press the Windows key + X and select from the menu that appears Command Prompt (Administrator). If you are on Windows 7 press the windows key to open your start menu and type “Command Prompt” to search for the cmd. Once it shows itself, right click on the Command Prompt file and select “Run as an administrator”.
  2. Now use the command prompt to navigate to the your Max Payne installation folder. If you don’t know how to navigate with the command prompt, you can use this guy’s Tutorial to do this step.
  3. Once you are in the correct folder, execute the file by typing “MaxPayne.bat” and press “C” to convert your sound files. If you want, you can delete the MaxPayne.bat file and all files that came with the downloaded zip file once the conversion is complete.

5. Run the main game file and from the “before game Window” go to the options and turn off Anti-Aliasing. Choose your preferred resolution and enjoy the game. If the characters seem stretched, then adjust the resolution to suit your screen.

How To Fix Max Payne 2 for Windows 7 and 8+ machines.

Some of the steps you need to make here are similar to the fix above for Max Payne 1. Anyway here is what you should do.

Official Max Payne 2 Trailer

1. If you've modified any of the game files, please reinstall the game so that we start fresh. If you don’t have the game you can download a digital version from Steam or a physical CD version from Amazon.

2. Go to your installation directory and make sure you’ve got no spaces in the folder names (directory structure/tree), for example, if you’ve installed Max Payne in D:\Games\Max Payne 2, then you should rename the “Max Payne 2” folder to “MaxPayne2” e.g. D:\Games\MaxPayne2

3. Go to the launcher file (the .exe file), right click, and from the menu select properties. From the new Window go to the Compatibility tab and turn on “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and from the dropdown menu right underneath choose “Windows 98 / Windows ME.

4. Double click on the .exe file to start the game launcher. Press the Options/Settings button and from there turn off Anti-Aliasing and set the other settings as you wish. Now the game should work fine. If you still encounter problems, then continue to Step 5. However, before you do so, try launching the game from the .exe file in the installation directory itself and not through steam.

5. If you still have issues with launching the game, here is what you should try.

If you are on Windows 8, press the Windows key + X and choose "Run" from the menu that comes up. Type msconfig in the new window and hit the enter button. From the new window that appears select the “Boot” tab and press the “Advanced Options” button. Turn on “Number Of Processors:” and from the dropdown menu choose “1”. Press “OK” on both windows and Restart your computer.

IMPORTANT: Once you are done playing the game you should go back to the “Advanced Options” and UNSELECT (TURN OFF) the “Number Of Processors”. If you don’t do that, then your computer will use only a single core from your processor which will slow down your computer, games and software installed.

Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge fix for Windows 8

This is a pure classic and a great game to play when you’ve got a bit more time available on your hands. The game was released (RA2) on October 23th 2000 and was developed and designed by Westwood (later acquired by Electronic Arts) for Windows 95 / 98 / and Me (Windows Millenium) machines.

Anyways, your are here to find out whether you can play Red Alert 2 on a Windows 8 machines, and the answer is - YES, but you need to apply some fixes and patches before you’ll be able to run the game and even then there are no guarantees.

If you’ve played the game before, here is a little reminder that will make you nostalgic.

I told you it would :)

Here is a step-by-step guide.

However, before we start, if you are about to modify a file always make a backup of the original first. To be safe I recommend you simply make a copy of the whole folder. If you ever need to restore a file you've modified, you can simply look inside your backup folder.

1. You'll need to copy the game directory (usually found in C:\Program Files (x86)) to somewhere else outside the Program Files directory.

2. Download this Graphics Patch from here and put it inside your game directory.

3. Rename Yuri’s Revenge’s exe file to gamemd.exe and Red Alert 2’s exe file to game.exe and run the patch. Once the game has been successfully patched, you can delete the file. Note that you’ll need Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 or later to run the patch. If you don’t have the framework installed, you can download it from here.

4. Download DDWrapper from here and extract the zip file inside your game directory.

5. Edit aqrit.cfg in notepad and change the following settings as shown below.
NoVideoMemory = 1
forcedirectdrawemulation = 1

6. Now you can create a desktop shortcut of the game by right clicking on the executable file -> Send To -> Desktop (create shortcut)

7 Go to your desktop and right click on the newly created shortcut, and select properties. Go to the compatibility tab and turn on “Run the program in compatibility mode”, and select Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the dropdown menu below. Turn on “Reduce Colour Mode” and select 16bit from the dropdown menu after which also turn on “Run this program as administrator.

8. Go back to the Shortcut tab and in the Target box after the last closing double quotation mark press space and enter “-win” without the quotation marks. This will make the game run in windowed mode which is very important. Here is an example of the target text.
"C:\Users\Roberto\Desktop\Red Alert 2\gamemd.exe" -win

9. Play and enjoy.

Optional: You can edit the .ini file to adjust your resolution.

Note 1: If your screen goes black and/or flickers don’t click inside the game window, it will crash the game. Just wait for the main-menu to appear.

Note 2: While playing if you click outside the Windowed frame, the game will crash. You can fix this by matching the game’s resolution with your desktop resolution.

Note 3: If you try to alt tab out of the game, it will crash.

Note 3: If you can’t play online, try disabling all unnecessary adaptors and tunnels in your network settings.

How To Fix Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed on Windows 8

Just like you, I enjoyed playing Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed when I was younger. When nostalgia kicks in I enjoy replaying games from my youth like the NFS Porsche Unleashed.

This tutorial type article will help you run Porsche Unleashed on a Windows 8 or 7 running machine. (I think the first time I played this game it was on a Windows ME machine). Anyway

The fix is actually quite simple.

The first thing you need to do is run Porsche Unleashed in Windows XP Service Pack 2 mode and it should start up smoothly.

If you don’t know how to run software in compatibility mode, here is step-by-step instructions.

Go to Desktop Mode (if you are running Windows 8), right click on your Porsche Unleashed icon and select properties from the drop down menu.

If you don’t have a Porsche Unleashed shortcut on your desktop, you’ll need to create it. To do this you’ll first need to locate your installation folder, right click on the launcher file (the .exe file), select Send To and click on Desktop (create shortcut)

Now that you’ve got to the Properties window click on the Compatibility tab and you’ll see the following options (or something similar)

Check on the “Run this program in compatibility mode for” checkbox and from the dropdown menu choose Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

Click on apply and see whether it works now for you.

If you get the Normandie Track crash, then read on. I’ve got the fix for that below

Apparently, the reason the crash happens has something to do with the sky of the game and the sky files.
There are two methods I’ve found that will get you through the Normandie track.

The first one is to turn off your rearview mirror in the game’s settings and, if that doesn’t help, then try turning of lens flare as well. You can try putting them back on again once you’ve completed the track.

The second option is to replace the Farmland files with the Corsica’s files.

Here is how to do this.

Navigate to your main game folder (usually C:/Program Files/Electronic Arts/Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed) and then continue to Game Data, Track and Sky.

In the Sky folder you’ll find three files Canyon.bin, Canyon.fsh and Canyon.txt. Select all three files by holding the Shift button and left clicking on the first and last file. Now press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to make a copy of the files.

You should see three new files appear starting with the words “Copy of…”.

You’ll also want to backup the original files just in case something goes wrong and you need to restore the originals. To do this find and rename these three files Farmland.bin, Farmland.fsh and Farmland.txt to Farmland.bin.BAK, Farmland.fsh.BAK and Farmland.txt.BAK. (to rename a file right click on it and from the menu choose Rename)

Go back to the files starting with Copy of… and rename these files to Farmland without changing the file extensions (everything after the dot of the filename)

Here is the exact names

Copy Of Canyon.bin -> Farmland.bin
Copy Of Canyon.fsh -> Farmland.fsh
Copy Of Canyon.txt  -> Farmland.txt

Either fix you choose will work. Have fun playing it.
