How to fix and play Max Payne 1 and 2 on Windows 7 and 8 computers

I have written this tutorial for fans of Max Payne 1 and 2 who want to run both games on Windows 7 and 8 computers but had no luck so far.

For those of you who haven't played Max Payne before, the game is awesome! It was released in 2001 and developed by Remedy Entertainment, and is center around a New York police detective (Max Payne) who witnesses his family getting murdered and unravels a government conspiracy while investigating who was behind it all.

What follows below is a step-by-step guide taking you through each “tweak” you should make to play Max Payne 1 on Windows 7 and 8 machines. Once I've explained all steps about how to run Max Payne 1, i will continue to write about Max Payne 2, so if you are here for the later, you can simply scroll down to the second section.

How To Fix Max Payne 1 for Windows 7 and 8+ machines.

1. If you haven't installed the game yet, please do so now. In case you've modified any of the game files, please reinstall the game so we can start fresh. If you don't have the game, you can buy a digital downloadable version from Steam or a physical disk version from Amazon if you prefer the advantages of a physical copy.

2. Make sure you’ve got no space in your directory structure. So if you’ve installed Max Payne at D:\Games\Max Payne, you should rename your “Max Payne” directory to MaxPayne e.g D:\Games\MaxPayne

3. Go to the exe file from which you start the game, right click, and choose properties from the menu. From the new window go to the Compatibility tab and turn on “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and from the dropdown menu right underneath choose “Windows 98/Me”. Next turn on “Run this program as an administrator” and press the OK button on the window to confirm changes.

4. With this 4th step we’ll fix the sound issues of Max Payne. If you’ve ever attempted to play Max Payne 1 on Windows Vista/7 or 8, then you probably came accross the audio issues with the cut-scene talks, intros etc - they are simply missing. The reason for this happening is that the original sound files are incompatible with the aforementioned Windows versions. To fix this you’ll need to convert the sound files to a more compatible format. Lucky us, there is a simple patch developed by “DarkjeThe2nd” which solves this problem.

You can download the patch by clicking here. To install it simply follow the instructions on the forum. (1) Extract the zipped file to your game directory (2) run the MaxBatch file and press “C” to convert your sound files. After the process has been completed, you can delete the downloaded files.

If you cannot extract the file or you don't know how, you should install and use either WinRAR or 7zip. Once you've installed either application and by right clicking on the zipped file, you'll see options to extract the file.

If you have troubles running the MaxBatch file, for example if the Window closes too fast, then do this optional step. You’ll need to navigate and execute the file from your command prompt as an administrator.

  1. If you are on Windows 8, press the Windows key + X and select from the menu that appears Command Prompt (Administrator). If you are on Windows 7 press the windows key to open your start menu and type “Command Prompt” to search for the cmd. Once it shows itself, right click on the Command Prompt file and select “Run as an administrator”.
  2. Now use the command prompt to navigate to the your Max Payne installation folder. If you don’t know how to navigate with the command prompt, you can use this guy’s Tutorial to do this step.
  3. Once you are in the correct folder, execute the file by typing “MaxPayne.bat” and press “C” to convert your sound files. If you want, you can delete the MaxPayne.bat file and all files that came with the downloaded zip file once the conversion is complete.

5. Run the main game file and from the “before game Window” go to the options and turn off Anti-Aliasing. Choose your preferred resolution and enjoy the game. If the characters seem stretched, then adjust the resolution to suit your screen.

Some of the steps you need to make here are similar to the fix above for Max Payne 1. Anyway here is what you should do.

1. If you've modified any of the game files, please reinstall the game so that we start fresh. If you don’t have the game you can download a digital version from Steam or a physical CD version from Amazon.

2. Go to your installation directory and make sure you’ve got no spaces in the folder names (directory structure/tree), for example, if you’ve installed Max Payne in D:\Games\Max Payne 2, then you should rename the “Max Payne 2” folder to “MaxPayne2” e.g. D:\Games\MaxPayne2

3. Go to the launcher file (the .exe file), right click, and from the menu select properties. From the new Window go to the Compatibility tab and turn on “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and from the dropdown menu right underneath choose “Windows 98 / Windows ME.

4. Double click on the .exe file to start the game launcher. Press the Options/Settings button and from there turn off Anti-Aliasing and set the other settings as you wish. Now the game should work fine. If you still encounter problems, then continue to Step 5. However, before you do so, try launching the game from the .exe file in the installation directory itself and not through steam.

5. If you still have issues with launching the game, here is what you should try.

If you are on Windows 8, press the Windows key + X and choose "Run" from the menu that comes up. Type msconfig in the new window and hit the enter button. From the new window that appears select the “Boot” tab and press the “Advanced Options” button. Turn on “Number Of Processors:” and from the dropdown menu choose “1”. Press “OK” on both windows and Restart your computer.

IMPORTANT: Once you are done playing the game you should go back to the “Advanced Options” and UNSELECT (TURN OFF) the “Number Of Processors”. If you don’t do that, then your computer will use only a single core from your processor which will slow down your computer, games and software installed.
